Miami reporter Britt Montero covers the crime beat and is good friends with the detectives on the cold-case squad, who are investigating an old rape/murder case. Now one of the probable suspects, a petty thief, is killed during a break-and-enter, but the cold-case team doesn't have permission to re-open the case and therefore enlists Montero to investigate. The surviving victim is puzzlingly uninterested in helping the investigation... and is she endangered by the remaining suspects, who know someone is looking into the case? It's a decent mystery/thriller, but not a great one. The Miami setting is superficially used, in no more depth than a postcard. Montero and the detectives are mostly interesting characters, but her romance with McDonald is really, really gooey, and I sighed with relief when the obvious foreshadowing paid off and he was killed.
